A Brief History

The Bexley Monk was named for the famous French monk Dom Pérignon who is credited with having perfected the process by which fine Champagne is produced.

Pierre Pérignon was born in 1640, he was the son of a clerk to a local judge. At 19, he became a Benedictine monk in the Abbey of Saint-Vannes at Verdun. At only 28, he became the cellar master of the Abbey of Hautvilliers!

The first record of sparkling wines production in France dates back to 1531 in Limoux (south of France), that is about one century before Dom Pérignon's birth.

But the Dom was a great vineyard manager and winemaker and he studied and perfected the blending of varietals to form what is now the accepted standard in the entire Champagne region. Further, he was the man who found out how to maintain the proper pressure in the bottle to avoid continual explosions.  Dom Pérignon died in 1715. He was buried amongst his vines.

References to his "blind tastings" led to the common misconception that Dom Pérignon was, in fact, blind, which resulted in our restaurant originally being named "The Blind Monk." However, when it was discovered that he was not blind the name was revised to Bexley Monk.

The restaurant was originally designed and owned by two Bexley boys - George McCloy and Don Casto.  George's wife, former Miss Ohio Diane McCloy, ran the place for the first few years and then sold it to partners Steve Gifford and Jack Cory.

The restaurant flourished for years under the astute management of these two superb restaurateurs.  Customers came to rely on the quality food, hospitable bar, jazz entertainment and great wine list. The Monk, under Jack and Steve  was a consistent Top 10 Columbus restaurant.

However, in 2004 the restaurant reverted back to George and Don and the legendary Bexley Monk continues...
